Summary: In 1860, eleven-year-old Elijah Freeman, the first free-born child in Buxton, Canada, which is a haven for slaves fleeing the American south, uses his wits and skill to try to bring to justice the lying preacher who has stolen money that was to be used to buy a family’s freedom.

1. What was special about Elijah? He was the first child born free in the Elgin settlement at Raleigh in Canada West also known as Buxton.
2, What did Elijah do when he could not get anyone to help him free the slaves? He went back to the stable and told the woman a story about how her baby looked just like his sister who died and he wanted to borrow her to take her to his mom. He took the baby to freedom in Buxton.
3. What would happen in Buxton when slaves arrived in Buxton? They would ring the “Liberty Bell” 20 times for each person. That was 10 times to ring out their old life and ten for ringing in their new life.
